To my knowledge there are currently 6 editions of Casino Royale on CD which I have detailed to the best of my ability below.Ĭasino Royale was not an official Bond score (ironically it was Fleming's first novel) and unable to quote either the John Barry or Monty Norman theme. Recent issues have expanded the score and through various means, attempted to restore the sound as heard on the original LP. The mess was the fault of both tape degradation and further damage inflicted by Varese Sarabande during the transfer. In the 90s, when Varese Sarabande released the soundtrack on CD, the sound was over-bright, shrill and distorted, especially on the title theme. (I have a stereo copy, albeit a very scratched one, and it is superb.) The sound engineers, perhaps inspired by the on-screen madness, took advantage of a 'fancy high grade tape' and pushed the sound levels into the 'red', ordinarily this would have resulted in hideous distortion but not so on 'Casino Royale'. Audiophiles consider the LP of Burt Bacharach's score to be one of the best, if not the best recording ever made.
